After School Activities

Athletics | Performing Arts | Clubs

Hawthorn Academy has a variety of wonderful clubs and competitive sports that students may participate in. All after-school Athletics and Performing Arts activities are held at the West Jordan Campus.

Soccer

We have two soccer teams, boys and girls. Open to students in grades 6–9 from both the West Jordan and South Jordan campuses.

  • Boys Soccer (Fall Season): Mid-August through early October

  • Girls Soccer (Spring Season): Mid-March through early May

Practices are held Monday through Thursday from 3:30–4:45 p.m., and games typically take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. All practices, home games, and tryouts are held at the West Jordan campus.

Tryouts are scheduled over two days a few weeks before the season begins. Each team is limited to approximately 21 players, and team placement is determined based on performance during tryouts.

For more information about either team, please contact Coach Jared Emerick.

Volleyball

Hawthorn Academy offers both Girls and Boys Volleyball, with girls’ season generally running from August to October (Fall) and boys’ season from March to May (Spring). Students in 6–9 grade can participate.

Each team is limited to 22 players from both campuses, depending on interest and available spots. Practices are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as games are usually scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays. In preparation for the first game, the team practices Monday through Friday. Practice times are from 3:15–5:00 p.m. (Monday–Thursday) and 1:15–3:00 p.m. on Fridays.

Games can be either home or away, with travel ranging from Layton to Pleasant Grove. Matches generally begin at 4:00 p.m. and conclude by 6:00 p.m. Varsity plays first, followed by Junior Varsity.

Interested students should attend tryouts in the gym and be ready to demonstrate their volleyball skills.

For more information about either team, please contact Coach Jacquelyne Martin.

Basketball

We have Basketball teams for both boys and girls, open to students in grades 6–9 from both the West Jordan and South Jordan campuses. Boys basketball takes place in the fall, while girls basketball is held in the spring.

Tryouts are held a couple of weeks before the start of each season. Practices are twice a week and the teams play two games per week, with Fridays off. Practice and game days may vary depending on gym availability and league scheduling. Participation requires a strong commitment to both practices and games, and team placement is determined based on tryout performance.

For additional information, please contact Coach Michael Layden or Coach Juan Anzar. Anyone interested in helping out with coaching is encouraged to reach out!

Cheer

The Cheer Team is a co-ed team open to both girls and boys in grades 6–9 from both the West Jordan and South Jordan campuses and takes place year-round.

Tryouts are typically held near the end of the previous school year. To try out, students must attend two mandatory clinic sessions before the official tryout date.

Students interested in joining should watch for announcements about tryouts, clinic dates, and required paperwork.

Musicals involve collaboration between the theatre, music, and dance programs, with rehearsals held after school and performances in the evening.

The theatre department also produces smaller in-class performances. These are rehearsed during regular class time and performed in the evening.

For more information, please contact Tori January or watch for school announcements.

Clubs

Club offerings vary by campus and are dependent on teacher availability. Clubs are free of charge and typically meet for one hour after school, once or twice a week. The grade levels eligible to participate may vary depending on the nature of the club, but in general, clubs are open to all grade levels unless otherwise specified.

Students are also encouraged to propose their own clubs. With administrative approval and a willing teacher sponsor, new clubs can be created to reflect student interests and passions.
